It's easy...

It's easy to throw a word around to be insulting.

It's easy to hide behind excuses- "I didn't mean it that way", "I don't think Ethan is that"...

It's easy to say "Oops, sorry", and then go about your day without a care in the world...repeatedly.

It's easy to use my son's medical diagnosis- something he has NO control over, as a joke.

http://www.r-word.org/

Take the pledge.  Take the pledge to spread the word to END the word retard(ed).

This is not a "you're just too sensitive" or "here comes the PC police" issue.  This is a respect issue.  I ask that you do your part, for Ethan, and all of those with intellectual disabilities.  A person's medical diagnosis should not be the "go to" for a laugh or insult to another.  While you are laughing at your inventive insult, you are hurting me, Ethan, and so many others.

My friend, Amy, has written the most powerful, eye-opening, and heartfelt post.  Please take a moment to read "Why the word retard isn't funny".  You can also follow Amy's journey here.

This is just a snippet of what we hear all the time.  Nice, right?

When we hear the word "retard" used as an insult, way to demean someone, to feel less than, to laugh at a joke – it is beyond disrespectful. It shows that the user has no compassion, love, or empathy. It shows a lack of education. It shows a lack of being kind. It shows a lack of treating others as you wish to be treated. It shows ignorance. You DO mean Ethan when you use this word so don't use it.

You can do this.  You can make a difference.  You can take the pledge.  You can choose respect over insult.  It really IS an easy thing to do.

Love this!

Way too important not to share! Some just do not know what they are missing! Others are very fortunate! If you're looking for a plan B in this economy, you may want to look at having your own virtual franchise!!!

http://www.juiceplusvirtualfranchise.com/

Ready for a Plan B? 97% of people work a J.O.B = (Just Over Broke). All of them want a M.B.A. = (Massive Bank Account). They are clueless on how to create wealth and be R.I.C.H = (Residual Income Creates Happiness). Continuously surrounding themselves with H.A.T.E.R.S = (Having Anger Towards Everyone Reaching Success). And then wonder why they are P.O.O.R = (Passing Over Opportunity Repeatedly).

Can't afford it?

I was at the grocery store the other day and needed to pick up some fresh fruit.
IMG_0693
I browsed the apple section and glanced at the price.  $1.99/lb.  Ok, so how many apples will that get me?

IMG_0694
ONE.  One apple for $1.99 {ok, slightly under since the apple was just under a pound}.

Juice Plus+ provides the nutrition from 17 vine-ripened fruits, vegetables, and grains for $1.39/day.  That is less than the cost of one apple a day.

What are you waiting for?

Choices

Today, I had to make a very difficult choice.  And, after I tell you what choice I had to make, I am sure that you will agree that it would be hard for anybody to choose.

This morning, I had the pleasure of going to church with my friend Nancy.  Just me and her.  Ethan and Scott stayed home.  Once I got home and had lunch, I either had to tackle the laundry oorrrrrrrrrr grab a pillow and a few blankets, along with my favorite son and head outside onto the hammock for the best time of snuggles and Sunday nap.  SUCH.A.HARD.DECISON.

It was a little cooler today than yesterday, but it made it so that Ethan cuddled up to me really close.  I had my forehead to his and I thought of how peaceful it was to be outside without phone, tv, or internet, and to hear the birds chirping, and to open my eyes to watch the clouds drift by.

I ended up not sleeping much at all.  I ended up staring at my beautiful son sleep.  I listened to his precious "sleepy" talk and wondered what he was dreaming.  I looked at the peach fuzz on his face as the wind blew across his handsome face.  I watched his long eyelashes flicker as he dreamt.  I watched his body rise and fall with each inhale and exhale of breath.  I watched in amazement of this amazing creation that I brought into this world.

As I reflected upon his complete and total perfection, my heart was sad for all of the uneducated people who would choose to NOT bring a child like Ethan into this world because of fear of the unknown or fear of not being normal or perfect.  He is the most precious gift that Scott and I have to date.  I hope that people who know us or meet us know that.

So, today I had to make the {obviously} simple choice to let the laundry wait another day in order for me to have one on one time with my boy and all of his perfection.  Gosh, I hope that I have to face that choice again soon.

Inspiration Through Opportunity*

Ethan WalkingHR

Inspiration Through Opportunity*
By Kristen Faulkner Pfafftown, NC

Nearly eight years ago, our son, Ethan, was born. We had no idea what was in store for us — even before we got the news Ethan has Down syndrome! My husband, Scott, and I chose to focus on our baby and not the fact that he was sporting an extra chromosome. While we appreciated people further along in this journey offering us support, it was overwhelming to hear about what their older kids were doing. We just wanted to love Ethan and enjoy his babyhood...

We immediately enrolled Ethan in Early Intervention (EI). Monthly home visits increased to weekly with constant reassurance that Ethan was “right where we expect him to be.” Not having other children or direct involvement with other children with DS, those words were blissful music.

Ethan will be a superstar and prove everyone wrong about how successful a person with Down syndrome can be!

Time passed and it became obvious Ethan was not where he should be developmentally. We asked for more EI visits, physical, occupational and speech therapy. The news was discouraging with limited therapy options and an hour plus drive to see a private pediatric therapist. Our speech requests were denied since “children with DS don’t talk until they are older than three anyway.” After running in circles trying to get Ethan the necessary services, a door opened… across the country!

Based on his needs, Ethan was accepted into a five-star developmental day preschool program, passing over six children on the waiting list ahead of him. It was heart-wrenching to leave our family, friends and everything familiar to give Ethan the opportunity to catch up in his development in an inclusive preschool with all of his therapists in one setting. We felt we had to take the chance. We were so fortunate to have found such an amazing school.

We were confident Ethan would catch up and prove that children with DS can do anything if given the opportunity!

Unfortunately, Ethan’s health rapidly declined soon after we arrived in our new home. After four months of continuous infections, antibiotics, fevers and restless nights, a blood test revealed all of Ethan’s blood counts were dangerously low. Not just anemic, but requiring a blood transfusion.

A repeat CBC and a referral to our local children’s hospital confirmed Ethan was about to face the fight of his life — quite literally. Three months shy of his third birthday, Ethan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and underwent surgery to have a port-a-cath placed in his chest to begin chemotherapy treatment.

Over the course of the nearly three-year course of treatment, including daily doses of chemotherapy, Ethan was hospitalized countless times. (The parking deck employees actually thought that I was an employee because they “saw me all the time.”) From blood infections and pneumonia, to an actual Code Blue and induced coma in the PICU due to a bronchoscopy gone terribly wrong, the hospital was our home away from home.

During his treatment we discovered Ethan also had dysphasia and required thickened liquids, severe acid reflux and a B-cell deficiency. These discoveries added to Ethan’s time in the hospital due to aspirate pneumonia from both food being swallowed AND reflux coming back up. We couldn’t focus on therapy. Our main concern was for Ethan to beat his battle with cancer.

When we could finally claim victory over the cancer, I began my own inner battle. I needed to move on to the next challenges…walking…talking…chewing food….

It has been incredibly difficult to watch children younger than Ethan surpass him in their development. To see children — born years after Ethan — walking or communicating leaves emptiness within my husband and me. But, we continued to remind ourselves that chemo and hospitalizations are not a desirable combination on any day, particularly for a child with special needs who developmentally may rapidly regress.

For some reason, Scott and I focused on walking. I think we just wanted him to be up and about with his peers. I figured that if Ethan was running around with other kids, communication would soon follow. The same was true with oral motor skills and eating...if other kids were doing it, so would Ethan. We had to start somewhere; and, for us, that was walking.

A year after finishing treatment, Ethan still did not attempt to walk or do more than minimal weight bearing. Someone told me about a rare neurological condition called Tethered Cord Syndrome (TCS). The more I looked into it, I felt there was a strong possibility that Ethan had TCS. I asked the doctor, a local neurosurgeon, to order an MRI to confirm the diagnosis. He refused, saying TCS “is not Down syndrome-related.” I persisted and finally, nearly a year later, a MRI confirmed Ethan had been born with TCS.

This taught me an important lesson about following instincts. When I have a gut feeling about something regarding Ethan, I pay attention. I urge other parents to do so, too.

Three months ago, a different neurosurgeon performed the surgical repair. The new doctor said there was no doubt Ethan needed the surgery and that it was likely the main cause of his slow growth and difficulty with walking. Since the surgery, we have seen an amazing improvement in Ethan’s walking. He is visibly excited to be up and independent.

Technically, Ethan’s needs classify him as “severe and profound delayed.” This still brings moments of sadness. We remind ourselves that this sweet child of ours has faced more challenges than average. In addition to everything else, Ethan has also been diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), a form of autism.

Because of Ethan’s severe delays, I feared he would never get to know students outside of his classroom, but his neighboring students love Ethan! My son is a little celebrity at school. The kids say “hi” and “bye” to Ethan in his very own ESL (Ethan Sign Language). His fellow students want to help him walk and learn. They want to know Ethan. The kids describe Ethan as sweet, fun, nice, loving, friendly, smart and walking. They see a friend who is a good kid, likes to play, is part of their school family and says "hello" in a special way.

Recently, some of the students wrote letters to Ethan. When I read them, my heart bursts with happiness and pride:

• “When you laugh, it makes me happy.”
• “I love having you in our class.”
• “Ethan, you’re awesome!”
• “You are an intelligent person.”
• “You make a difference in my life.”
• “Every time you come in our classroom, if someone is sad and you give them a smile, then they feel happy again.”
• “I have seen you mad, sad, happy, and glad. I have seen all your feelings. I love being with you.”
• “You’re really not that different than me — you just have harder hair.”
• “After getting to know him, my children grew to love Ethan and realized the beauty of children with special needs.” (from a parent and teacher)

Ethan’s school principal says:
Ethan brings such a great perspective to our daily lives.  He is absolutely the most popular young man in our school! Our students love him for who he is.  They have learned about his struggles and assist him in such a caring and loving way. They do not see him as “different,” they see him as “theirs.” They embrace him and help him learn..and all the while he is helping them learn...he helps us all learn about mutual respect, persistence, consistency, patience, kindness, and genuine happiness. We are better because we know Ethan.

Over the past few years, I have found myself feeling as if I didn’t belong in the DS “club” anymore because of Ethan’s delays. We did not fit the profile of a DS “superstar.” That felt very isolating.

Now, while Ethan may never be the keynote speaker at a podium or a world-class athlete, I know that he is a superstar in his own right. Ethan has already overcome so many obstacles in his life and has inspired so many people. Today, I celebrate my son and his successes, be it nail trimming without a tantrum or that first independent step.

My sweet boy...

My darling, sweet boy melted my heart this morning.  After I dropped Ethan off at school this morning, I went to Krispy Kreme to get the class some heart-shaped donuts (YUMMO).

When I got into the class, they were in the middle of circle time.  Ethan turned around and saw me come in.  He gave me a sweet grin- which was precious, but what totally melted my heart was when he looked around his teacher to see me again and he then blew me kisses and signed "hi" without any prompting!

Functional and appropriate communication.  Freaking LOVE it!!!  ♥

Princess O

Three years ago, Olivia left us.  It is so hard to believe that 3 years has passed.  Not a day goes by that she is not in our thoughts.  There isn't a day that goes by that we don't miss her.  I can actually still smell her hair.  I cannot fully express to anyone how much that precious little girl meant to me or how much I love that child.  I know that Karen knows and I guess that's all that really matters.

My wish for Karen today is that she feels the breeze upon her cheek as she gets that kiss from her baby directly from the land of happy.

Olivia's Montage

I always sang this to Olivia.  God Bless her, she asked for it over and over again.  Poor Karen had to listen to me sing it over and over again.  LOL.

As always, please keep Karen and Weldon in your thoughts and prayers today.  Thanks.  ♥

I want this skill back!

Has your child been sick this season?

There are many of us that dread cold/flu season because of what it does to our kids.  The misery, the snot, the coughing, the whining, the crying, the missed school, the missed work...

I have had our family on Juice Plus+ since the summer.  We are not immune to illness, BUT I can report that Scott and I have both had minimal cold symptoms and they only last a day or two.  What is even more exciting for me is that Ethan hasn't been out sick ONCE.  The once immuno-compromised child whose runny nose would always turn into a need for an antibiotic has not been out sick once.  He has been surrounded by kids in his class who have been sick, but he is plugging on.  Coincidence?  I don't think so!  The healing effects of vine-ripened fruits and vegetables are obvious by our own testimony!

We participate in the Juice Plus+ Children's Health Study.  The study enables us to get Ethan's product free with a paying adult order for up to 3 years.  Some study results have just been released:

The latest results are in!

Based on the responses of 150,000 families participating in the Children's Health Study, taking Juice Plus+® has far-reaching effects on health and well-being.

See the results HERE.

After making Juice Plus+® a part of their daily lives, children and adults are:

  • Eating more fruits & vegetables
    • After only 4-8 months, over half of children and nearly two-thirds of adults are eating more servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Eating less fast food and drinking fewer soft drinks
    • After only 4-8 months, two-thirds of children and adults are eating less fast food and drinking fewer soft drinks and/or high-sugar children's beverages every day.
  • Drinking more water
    • After only 4-8 months, 63% of children and 68% of adults are drinking more water throughout the day.
  • Visiting the doctor less
    • After only 4-8 months, over half of children and 42% of adults are visiting the doctor less for "sick visits."
  • Missing fewer days of school or work
    • After only 4-8 months, nearly half of children are missing fewer days of school.
    • Likewise, nearly half of adults are missing fewer days of work.
  • Taking fewer over-the-counter and/or prescription drugs
    • After only 4-8 months, nearly half of children and 34% of adults are taking fewer over-the-counter and/or prescription drugs on a regular basis.
  • More aware of their health and wellness
    • After only 4-8 months, more than 8 out of 10 children and adults have a greater awareness of their own health and wellness.
  • Reaping a positive benefit of some kind
    • After only 4-8 months, the vast majority of participants — 92% of children and 94% of adults — are reaping a positive benefit of some kind.
The best news of all is that the longer people stay on Juice Plus+®, the more health benefits they experience.

Poppy Seeds, Lentils, Blueberries...

A few weeks ago, I loved poppy seeds.  Next, Lentils.  Next should have been blueberries.

This was an inside acknowledgement of my complete joy and happiness for one of my bestest friends.  She had found out that she was pregnant just before New Year's.  What a ray of hope for the upcoming New Year!  I installed the BabyCenter app on my phone so I could be with her every step of the way through her wonderful journey.  I would be Auntie Boo, again, to another blessing.

Sadly, our dear Lentil never made it to be a Blueberry and our hearts ache.  Please keep my friend and her boyfriend in your prayers.  I take comfort knowing that Lil' Lentil is now with their Big Sister up above.

Ortho

I took Ethan to the ortho today for a follow-up from two years ago.  Ethan's last spinal x-ray showed slight scoliosis, but I don't know if it was because he wasn't being still during the x-ray or if he truly has some scoliosis from the tethered cord.  I thought that they would have new x-rays taken today, but they didn't.  It does still appear, by pure observation, that he has slight curvature but nothing of major concern.

The one thing that I was told today that really took me by surprise was that I was told that Ethan doesn't need his SureSteps any longer.  Ethan's ankles still pronate when he isn't wearing his braces so this really shocked me.  I was told that the SureSteps aren't going to change anything- his feet will still be flat and his ankles will still pronate.  I am not exactly sure how I feel about the explanation I was given, but she said that orthopedics and PT's will agree that unless you are dealing with a baby or child just learning to walk, the braces are not needed.  Feedback, please!

There is redness at the joint from the big toe to the foot and she thought that it was from his braces, but I am not so sure about that.  I have to take him back in three months for follow-up on Ethan's feet.

What else?  Oh...since the PA was really sweet, I asked her about my knee.  {I hurt it somehow during my missions trip in New York City back in April- NO idea how, but something is definitely wrong!}  She was sweet enough to ask me some questions and actually feel my knee.  After her mini-exam for me, she tells me that I definitely need a MRI.  Freaking Fabulous.  Torn tendon or something.  Surgery possible.  On the bright side, there's a possibility that I may only need injections.  Happy, happy, joy, joy.

On another side note:  Ethan weighed in at 47.2 pounds!!!  Holy shmoley.  That boy needs to learn to climb into his own car seat...

Poppy Seeds

Poppy Seeds.  Poppy Seeds are my favorite.  ♥

Alright, alright...

My family back home seems to have the "We know something's wrong" vibe going on.  And, as much as I hate to admit it because I would much rather deny it, crawl back into a hole and avoid it, and then (temporarily) get over it, they're right.  Something is wrong.  But, it's very personal.  It's my own personal emotion that no one can fix.

I have had these emotions for a long time, but they have magnified since September and then peaked when the clock struck midnight on New Year's.  The basic long story short is that *I* want another baby.  I have wanted a sibling for Ethan for years now.  We felt fortunate to only have Ethan when he battled leukemia and we felt that he deserved some "normal" life after treatment just dedicated to him.  Ever since, it just seems that we have hit road block after road block- Ethan not walking independently/Ethan not communicating much/money/job losses/insurance loss...

While things have definitely improved and we are blessed for sure, my desires are simply mine and mine alone.  My partner in life does not share my desire.  That is crushing.

It breaks my heart that Ethan may never be a big brother.  It breaks my heart that I may never have grandchildren.  Selfishly, I want the opportunity to know what "normal" is.  And, time is ticking.

Ethan turns 10 this year.  Ten.Years.Old.  That's a significant number to me.  Double digits.  There was just always something about if we went 10 years without having another baby, it won't ever happen.  It's been ten years since I felt the first movement inside of me from that precious gift of mine.  I missed it the moment I gave birth, and I have missed it ever since.  Pregnancy is an amazing gift and treasure from God and I question why my desire has been made so strong if God knows it will never happen for me again.

Of course, I can't see the future and I can't definitively say I will never have another baby, but at this point in time that future is not looking so bright.  Instead of shades, I need a flashlight.

In so many ways, I can almost understand infertility.  My heart breaks for all the families who have such a desire in their hearts to have a baby in their belly to love and nurture.  I try my best on most days to remind myself that there is a plan and that everything does happen for a reason, but some days it is just hard.

We all have our good days and our bad.  These days for me were just bad.  I turned 34 on Sunday which means that I am now on the downward spiral to the almighty 35 and the label of Advanced Maternal Age, which also didn't help much.  I wanted to go to church, but couldn't stop crying.  I never left my bedroom on Sunday.  I did not answer calls.  I never opened my laptop.  I was blessed by the pinging of hundreds of Facebook birthday messages to my phone, and when I updated my status yesterday to say that those messages from family and friends brought sunshine to my day, I was being honest.  I love you all for loving me through my bad days.

Trust that I am fine, I am just missing a part in my heart.

A New Brother

Last night, I actually wish that I was having an insomniac moment as my baby sister called me at 1am.  I was sooooooo far gone into dreamland when "I've got soul, but am not a soldier" {her ringtone} started blaring from my phone.  Startled, and a bit concerned as to why Kamrin would be calling me at 1am, I {quite groggily} answered.  My sweet sister says, "Sorry to wake you up, but I needed you to know before you saw it on Facebook in the morning...Kyle and I just got engaged".

kamengage2
Awwwww....

From that point, I think I was not very coherent, but basically said that I was happy for her.  I also asked the stupidest question on the planet- "Are you happy?".  Like she was going to say no.  Blame it on the fact that I was more than half asleep.

And yes, she knows me well.  I would have been REALLY upset to find out about her engagement via Facebook had she not made the executive decision to call me at 1am.  ;-)

kamkyle
Kamrin & Kyle on their cruise a year ago {I think}

The ring!  {A Hearts on Fire solitaire}

kamengage
Kamrin and her love, Kyle Turner {yes, that's Mr. Turner's son for all you MCHS'ers}, AKA:  Mr. & Mrs. Soon-to-be Mrs. Turner  ;)

Kyle's a great guy, just a little height challenged compared to our family, LOL.  I was able to talk to Kamrin earlier with a lot more enthusiasm than early this morning.  The best news, for me, is that once they are married, she can fly to see me via the military for FREE!  WOOT WOOT!!!  Granted, the nearest military base to fly into is a bit farther, but I don't care!

When I told Ethan today that Auntie Kamrin got engaged to Kyle and that Kyle would soon be his Uncle, I then asked him if he was excited about having a new Uncle Kyle.  Ethan was so excited, I wish that I would have had it on video.

Anywho, CONGRATULATIONS sista!!!  *muah*

Follow-up

Last week I wrote of some struggles that I was having.  It was a bad day that came to a head.  Not all of my thoughts came out, only bits and pieces of what I was struggling with.  Not to say that I am not struggling with them any longer, but I am feeling better.  The post was not about anyone specifically, but more about how I am dying spiritually and feeling that I don't have anyone that has noticed.  It's the name of the beast when your church is so large.  If you are not part of a group/clique/whatever, then you're just a face in the crowd.  It was not to suggest that no one cares.  It was not to suggest that we are ungrateful for our blessings of generosity from others in the past.  When you are struggling and emotional, words don't always come across as you intend- ESPECIALLY via a blog/e-mail/text.  Who knows if I am coming across as I am intending right now...

So, I took the post down because too many people told me that I sounded ungrateful and as if no one supports me.  That is the farthest from how I feel, so I apologize if that is how it came across to you.  Thank you to everyone who prayed for my Mom.  She is feeling better, thank you.

These Hard Times

My new theme song...

by:  Need To Breathe

Give me something brighter
Give me something I can see
Give me something vicious
Give me something I can be
Give me all the love and peace
To end these wars
Give me something sacred
Something worth fighting for

It's clear enough to me
The ugliness I see
Is evidence of who I need

Give me an answer
Give me a way out
Give me the faith
To believe in these hard times

Give me motivation
Give me all my heart's desires
Show me something gorgeous
Show me till my eyes get tired
Give me all the drums and
Show me how to play them loud
Show me how to move
When I can't feel that you're around

It's clear enough to me
The ugliness I see
Is evidence of who I need

Give me an answer
Give me a way out
Give me the faith
To believe in these hard times

We hide like theives in shadows
Scared of the sun
We know the light will find us
Us and all we've done

Give me an answer
Give me a way out
Give me the faith
To believe in these hard times

UPDATE: My Mom

She was discharged from the hospital with a theory that her bile duct may be clogged with "sludge".  She has to call a GI doc first thing tomorrow.  And, my sister and I will make sure that it happens!  We are not happy that they sent her on her merry way (drugged up, of course) without anything but a "theory".  From what I have read, bile duct obstructions are serious business and should not be taken lightly!

The good news is that I talked with her last night and she sounded really good.  She said that the reason for the blood was because of her intubation during surgery.

My Mom is one tough cookie, so she'll be just fine.  And, if she doesn't make the phone call, one of her daughter's will!  :)

***THANK YOU to all who prayed for her!!!  We appreciate it very much!***

Feeling Helpless...

My Mom had her shoulder surgery yesterday.  Something is very wrong now.  She has been in excruciating pain and vomiting some blood.  My Dad took her to the ER in Oakhurst because the pain was that bad.  She is now being ambulanced to the hospital in Clovis.  She is still vomiting and has a high white blood count.  And, I feel helpless.

I know that I couldn't do anything if I were there, but it's the fact that I *can't* be there right now.  I feel helpless waiting for the next call or text to come in with any news.  I have even been searching airfare.  I know that my Dad is worried, but trying to be calm and strong for Mommy's sake.  My Mom is strong, but I just hate that she's going through this in the first place!

Juice Plus+ vs. Mineral Supplements

Juice Plus+® vs. Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
by Dr. Smokey Santillo

The purpose of this article is to explain the difference between whole food nutrition and vitamin and mineral supplementation. It will also answer some vital questions concerning the proper use of vitamins and minerals and how they relate to Juice Plus+®. Two of the most commonly asked questions about Juice Plus+® are:

How does it compare to vitamin and mineral supplements?

How much of a certain vitamin (ex. vitamin C) is in Juice Plus+® ?
To answer the first question, you cannot and should not compare Juice Plus+® to manmade synthetic supplements. I will explain reasons why later in this article. As to the second question of how much of a specific nutrient is in Juice Plus+®, rather, the question should be - are the nutrients in Juice Plus+® absorbable (bioavailable) and used by the body?

Questions like these demonstrate a lack of public education of the true philosophy of nutrition. This is no one's fault; it is just time the lay person gets a better understanding and a sound philosophy of nutrition. It is not how much we put in the body, but how much the body can absorb over a long period of time.

Our bodies only absorb small amounts of nutrients at any single moment, not the huge amounts contained in most synthetic supplements, if the synthetics are absorbed at all. Normal amounts rather than mega-doses of bioavailable nutrients taken daily correlate with the laws of Nature. For example, when you look at the amounts of vitamin C contained in foods, it is relatively small compared to the amount in vitamin and mineral supplements. For instance, one orange has between 60-80 mg. of vitamin C.

The body is designed to handle foods and should get most of its vitamins from foods.(1) Many people consume isolated (USP) United States Pharmacopoeia listed vitamins. USP vitamins are synthesized, standardized, isolated, and are not always from natural sources, and are not always bioavailable.

In nature, vitamins and minerals are never isolated; they are always present in food in complex form (2-5), meaning synergistically connected to other nutrients and elements. Synergy means that each element works with and is interconnected with each other. No nutrient stands alone in whole foods. Most of these synergists are unknown to scientists, but please keep in mind the identity of a nutrient is found in connection with all other necessary food substances, not isolated by itself.

Each vitamin has a specific function and cannot be replaced by something else. The factors that influence the absorption of a nutrient relate not only to the nature of the nutrient itself, but also the interaction with other components (synergists) in the food.( 6) If you are deficient in one vitamin, the orchestra of nutrients in the body can be hindered in their metabolic function. This is not to say vitamin and mineral supplements do not work or are completely unnecessary. Vitamins are specific. Find out what you are deficient in and take them with whole foods.

We must understand man can never duplicate nature perfectly, especially when all vitamins, minerals, phyto-chemicals and enzymes are not yet known to man. He does not know what they are, has not discovered them yet, their action in the body, and the effect they have in the body isolated or with its other thousands of synergistic substances. How can a scientist produce what he has not yet discovered? Nutrition should not be guess work. Man at his best will never be able to produce the synergy of nature. Put your trust in nature.

There are thousands of unknown elements in each food. Ten years ago we knew nothing about phyto-chemicals (phyto=plant, plant chemicals), but they were in whole foods, put there by nature, absorbed from the soil, and are absolutely necessary for normal metabolic activities. Without them we lay the foundation for a weak immune system and disease. Look at the list of phyto-chemicals that are in just one whole apple. (See list - What's in a Fresh Whole Clean Apple?) Does your multiple vitamin and mineral supplement have what is in this one apple? Can you even imagine how many unknown but necessary chemical nutrients there are in all the other fruits and vegetables? We will never know exactly what is necessary to make a vitamin or mineral bioavailable. There have been studies that have shown that natural food complexes (concentrated foods) are better absorbed than isolated mineral salts. Here is an example of research, taken from an article written by Robert Theil, Ph.D., N.D. (7-18):

Food Complex Mineral

Compared to Mineral Salt?

Calcium - 8.79 times more absorbed into blood

Chromium - 10-25 times more bioavailable

Copper - 1.85 times more retained in the liver

Germanium - 5.30 times more retained in the liver

Iron - 1.77 times more absorbed into blood
Magnesium - 2.20 times more absorbed into blood

Manganese - 1.63 times more retained in the liver

Molybdenum - 16.49 times more absorbed into blood
Selenium - 17.60 times greater antioxidant effect

Zinc - 6.46 times more absorbed into blood

Another very important factor which is very seldom if ever explained to us is a term called selective absorption. This simply means that the body must choose what it needs and when it needs a nutrient to keep itself metabolically sound. All the known and unknown nutrients must be present at any given time to be absorbed. Only whole foods can supply these.

Vitamins and mineral supplements are sometimes necessary, but they are not nearly as comprehensive and bioavailable as food is, and should only be used for specific needs. They are not for everybody, every day. There are situations when mega-doses of vitamins and minerals may be necessary, particularly when used for athletes or people who are chronically ill. In these situations please consult a nutritional oriented physician.

Fruits and vegetables and other whole foods are absolutely, unequivocally necessary on a daily basis for all humans, adults and children. It is stated that we should eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Do you? Of course not. I would like to add something to this. Three of these fruits and vegetables should be dense, nutritious choices like parsley, kale, spinach, broccoli, and beets. When we do eat these foods, they are usually cooked. Cooking can be detrimental because of nutrient losses, making the equation even more difficult.

This brings us to the most important question of all. How do you compare Juice Plus+® to vitamin and mineral supplements? You really cannot compare them. A whole food concentrate is not a man made supplement. When asked this question, do not try to compare the two. Bring the person's attention to why Juice Plus+® was developed. It was developed to support two major foods groups- fruits and vegetables. And here are the reasons why:

We do not eat enough fruits and vegetables.

We cannot always get seasonal, fresh produce.

The soil and our foods can be very nutrient deficient.

We do not eat the dense nutritious fruits and vegetables. If we do, we cook them and destroy a large part of the necessary enzymes, vitamins, and minerals. Keep in mind frozen, processed, and canned foods can be deficient, to say nothing of foods that are shipped in from distant places that are losingtheir nutrient value.

We do not eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.

We know that Juice Plus+® is bioavailable. Do you know if the supplements you are taking are bioavailable?

Fruits and vegetables are necessary for everybody throughout their lifetime. Synthetic supplements may not be.

The known and unknown synergistic nutrients are in whole foods - fruits and vegetables. They are not in man made supplements.

Isn't it amusing that most folks believe that the foods they eat, particularly fruits and vegetables, are sustaining their bodies, building their immune system, and giving them all necessary nutrients? But, as soon as you take those same foods and concentrate the juice powders and fibers and put them into a capsule, these same people become suspicious. This is because :

It is a relatively new concept.

They are used to knowing exactly what is in a pill or capsule. This concept is supported by the drug industry.

They wonder how taking Juice Plus+® can be so healthy. It just seems too easy.

People wonder how we get fruits and vegetables in a capsule. Juice Plus+® is not dehydrated fruits and vegetables. It is the concentrated, fresh juice powders. If you remove all the water from a glass of orange juice, what would be left is the powder, which is the concentrate.

We know that the foods we are eating on a daily basis are not doing the job. Plenty of studies have proven these statements otherwise. In some situations supplements are necessary. Your first priority is to eat wholesome foods. Second, choose concentrated food sources to support your diet. Third, choose your vitamin and mineral supplements according to your needs.

The research that we have provided that has been done on Juice Plus+® is extraordinary, to say the least. There is not enough room in this paper to describe the entirety of the research that has been done. I will review some of these:

One research paper done in June 1996 showed how absorbable Juice Plus+® is. This was published in The Journal of Current Therapeutic Research (vol. 57, June 6, 1996). It demonstrated that taking Juice Plus+® for only 28 days increased beta-carotene 510%, alpha-carotene 119%, and lutein increased 44%. Lycopene increased 2, 046% and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) increased 58%. These were all blood studies. Blood was drawn before, during, and after the experiment.

Another study at the University of Arizona measured the effects Juice Plus+® has on the immune system. The results showed that after taking Juice Plus+®, T-cells were increased (they fight cancer and viruses), natural killer cells increased (these attack tumor cells and infections), and cytokines increased (hormone-like substances that stimulate the immune system).

A DNA study was done at the medical department at Brigham Young University. The average age of participants was 68 years. This study showed that the antioxidants contained within Juice Plus+® significantly reduced the level of DNA damage in the body. When the DNA gets damaged, cells begin to mutate into cancer cells and the immune system is weakened.

These studies have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that Juice Plus+® is not only absorbed through the digestive tract, but effects the interior cells of the body. The double edge research shows that nutrient contents of blood are affected plus the immune system is improved at all ages. This also makes Juice Plus+® an anti-aging food supplement. Please ask for copies of these studies from your local Juice Plus+® distributor.

Often times we face statements like, "Well, I take spirulina, or blue green algae, kelp, or bee pollen. Why do I need Juice Plus+® ?" All these products are wonderful. I added spirulina and kelp to Juice Plus+® Complete because of some of the nutrients they contain, but they are not fruits and vegetables. An orange is an orange, an apple is an apple; each are totally different from any other food. Consider all the unknown elements in an orange. God made every food different in some factor, whether it's the color, flavor, minerals, enzymes content, etc. We know we need a variety of foods in order to be healthy and what is most important is that we eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Spirulina, bee pollen, kelp, etc. are supplements to the diet - fruits and vegetables are a necessity. That's why we used 17 nutritionally dense fruits and vegetables in Juice Plus+®.

With Juice Plus+® we have actually concentrated nature into a capsule. Here is how:

We use several concentrated juice powders.

We add back more enzymes, phytochemicals, and fibers.

We get our fruits and vegetables from a variety of soils.

Putting Juice Plus+® together in this way helps to overcome any deficiencies present in any one food. Plus, each nutrient represented in Juice Plus+® is in more than just one of the foods included in the formula. Example: calcium is not just in carrots, but is also in spinach and broccoli also. Potassium is in parsley and beets. I call this a "nutritional loop system" when single nutrients are contained in more than one of the foods included in the formula.

It is important to understand that it takes time for whole food supplements to work in conjunction with normal body functions. Most people do feel different after a few short months on Juice Plus+®. But others that make statements that they don't feel a difference are under the delusion that nutrients work like drugs and you should feel immediate effects. Nutrients have few immediate effects. We have to wait until nature gets rid of deficient and defective cells, and replaces them with new cells that grow and strengthen the body. Renewal is slow and steady.

Your blood cells take three months for renewal, muscle cells and organs take six months, bones and teeth about a year. That is what good sound nutrition is all about. You have to wait until the nutrients are built into your structure to feel the difference and for it to show. It is similar to a house plant that has been neglected-you start to fertilize the plant and the plant perks up. But it sometimes takes a few days or weeks to see the difference.

Every year 97% of your body is replaced, reconstructed from the foods you eat. You have to make the choice. Are you going to depend on foods produced by nature or on man's supplements made in a laboratory? At Yale New Haven Hospital, researchers evaluated 257 vitamin products. (20). Some were made with wrong or cheap nutrients, some had improper ratios of nutrients, some were missing vitamins or minerals that were necessary. Only 49 were judged to be adequate. Choose your supplements carefully. Ask professionals or health food store owners to identify the best companies. Ask for a bioavailability study on the supplements you choose.

In summary, it is just a matter of understanding what true nutrition is and the role vitamin and mineral supplements play. Your priority is to eat healthy food, exercise and drink plenty of purified water. The supplements you choose are entirely up to you. Just make sure there is research to back up the bioavailability. Juice Plus+® has been proven to be bioavailable. The research has shown its effects reach down to the cellular structure of the body which is the ultimate goal of any formulated health product.

I hope this article has helped you in understanding the true philosophy of nutrition. Whole foods and whole food concentrates are necessary. Everybody at every age needs fruits and vegetables. This especially includes the athlete, the elderly, and growing children. Teach them to depend on nature, for the health and wealth of this country depend on it.

The Good and The Bad

The Good:  Ethan's modified barium swallow study today showed that he can graduate to nectar consistency!!!  He can even have a couple of ounces of non-thickened water in the morning!

The Bad:  The tummy x-ray taken today still shows moderate stool.  While the film looks better today than it did a month ago, it was still discouraging news since he has been fairly "regular".  Ugh.  Poor Bubs.

Faith and Trust

Almost everyone knows that two years ago, I was honored and blessed to travel to Kenya and love on some kids.  I thought that I would go to Kenya and be able to mark it off of my bucket list, so to speak.  I never imagined that I would feel the "calling" again.  But, after being able to step outside of my comfort zone, I almost immediately wanted to return.  Those children at the Challenge Farm have a very special place in my heart.  It was all God that I was able to go in the first place.  We certainly were not financially capable of me going on such a trip without the generosity of so many.  There have been trips back to Kenya since and each time, I send letters and wish that I was going, too.

Well, there is another team traveling back to Kitale in February.  I feel the pull to go.  My one and only reservation is finances.  I know that I can get help with Ethan, just like I did last time.  So, I sit here again thinking that there is NO WAY that I can raise the money needed ($2500/$1500 due mid-December) in the short amount of time.  There is a truth to that statement.  *I* can't.  God *CAN*.

I think that is the lesson.  I am putting a limitation on God's capability!  Who am I to say that God is not capable of providing if it is meant for me to return to Kenya?  Then, there's the *haters*, the people who chastise all international work when there is so much to do domestically, or the non-believers who don't believe that God is providing anything.  You feel like you are on constant attack once you commit to such a mission.  Am I strong enough to battle that spiritual warfare?  Nope.  But, God is.  I just have to lean upon Him for the strength.

Please join me in praying for what is meant to be for this trip, whether I am supposed to be a member of the team or not.  I need to have FAITH that if it is meant to be for me, then all of my needs will be met.  I need to TRUST that all of my needs will be provided for.

If you would like to help in the financial aspect (can we say end-of-year tax deduction?!!??!!!), checks can be sent to:

Dear Santa,

While at the Festival of Trees on Saturday, I had the pleasure of browsing all of the vendors.  Simply Sterling was there and had a display of shoes.  I have seen these shoes before, but did not find them attractive, so I would keep walking.  Well, on Saturday, I gave in to the request to try on a pair.  The first pair was too small for my man feet.  Then, we tried the Paloma.  Oh.My.Word.  It felt like I was getting a foot massage as I walked.  Freaking fabulous.  Since I have high arches and rarely wear shoes with support, I have been thinking about getting a really good shoe.

Unfortunately, my sweet husband saw the price of said foot massaging shoe and axed the idea.  I have been having some foot pain in my heel and really need to do something.  So, Dear Santa, if you could find your way to drop off a pair of black patent leather (even though I *love* the red ones above, I have nothing to wear them with) Alegria Paloma size 42's, I would love you forever.  :)

Love,
Kristen ☺

How do you say...

A-T-H-L-E-T-E?

I say, ath-leet, but have found many people pronounce it "ath-a-leet".  Where does the "A" come from?  Is this one of those supposedly vs. supposebly type deals?  LOL.

Today.

First of all, Happy Birthday to my friend, Alanna!  Alanna and I have known each other since elementary days, which means we are either closing in on the 30 year of friendship mark or we have already passed it.  ;)  Love ya, sis!  Hope you have had a great day!!!  xoxo

Today symbolizes something to me that sparks an emotional roller coaster.  I was never supposed to get to today.  This was not how I had my life planned, nor do I like to think about how things haven't turned out as planned in my perfect little world in my head.  But, it is a reminder that I am not in control of my life, God is.  And, apparently His timing and plan is SO much different than my own.  So, I have no other choice to sit here and remind myself that "there is a reason".  {And for those that have no clue what I am talking about, send me an e-mail and I'll explain it to you.}

I got to school to pick up Ethan for his private speech therapy and his school speech therapist (SLP) and occupational therapist (OT) were in his classroom.  The OT was actually working with Ethan.  Last week, she had sent home a note of concern for the redness between Ethan's fingers.  I let the teacher know that we were aware of the redness and have some antibiotic at home to put on it.  You see, Ethan does "mouth swipes" throughout the day to help himself swallow.  I am not a fan of this practice, but it is actually very smart of him to come up with his own way to safely help himself with his swallow.  I try to redirect to his "chewy" whenever possible.  We have found that saying "no mouth" to Ethan equals Ethan putting his hands in his mouth again.  *sigh*

So, long story short, the therapists feel that Ethan can't work effectively while putting things in his mouth therefore, they suggested using arm restraints.  {This is where my eyes start to bulge, and my blood starts to boil, and I do my best to keep my Mama Bear claws from coming out}  I really don't appreciate the suggestion of arm restraints on my child.  I have arm restraints for him, but they are only used for certain things, and it is rare {like trying to keep his hands down so he can get used to wearing his glasses again, but for only 20 minutes at a time}.  Anywho, I felt bullied by these women.  The SLP has already made a couple of comments about how Ethan's sign is not functional which ticks me off because we have worked really hard to get Ethan to have ANY form of communication, so if he has adapted some signs in order to communicate, that's fine by us and it is quite exciting!  I hate that she doesn't see or know that.  Such drama...

On a better note, Ethan is making great progress in private speech with the PECS method.  He gets ice cream every single session *eye roll*.  I don't plan on that continuing once he really grasps the concept.  Ice cream is a treat that we don't give in to very often, but how can you resist when he came up with his sign for ice cream?

Regardless of what the school therapists say or think, we are VERY proud of how far Ethan has come and the progress that he has been making.  Of course we would love to wave a magic wand and have these communication issues resolved, but since that is not going to happen, we have to be proud of where he is and look forward to even further improvement.

Juice Plus+ Research Continues to Grow

It’s an exciting time for Juice Plus+ research. Two clinical research studies were recently published online ahead of the printed journals.

Investigators at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro recruited 41 healthy adults to take either placebo or Juice Plus+ Orchard, Garden and Vineyard blend capsules for 28 days prior to an acute bout of eccentric exercise, and for four days after. The investigators found that Juice Plus+ helped prevent the increase in oxidative stress markers in the blood seen in placebo subjects.

A study conducted at Charite University Medical Center in Berlin, Germany followed health professionals (mainly nursing staff aged 18-65) who were in direct contact with patients and at a particularly high risk for exposure to germs. The subjects took Juice Plus+ Orchard and Garden Blend or matching placebo daily for eight months. The researchers concluded that taking Juice Plus+ was associated with a 20% reduction in days with moderate to severe symptoms over the cold winter season.

21 Things About Ethan

In honor of the last day of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, I have decided to share 21 Things About Ethan.  Some may already know these things, but I figured I would list as if someone was coming to this blog for the first time.

  1. We did not know prenatally that Ethan would be born with Down syndrome.
  2. Ethan does have a singular palmar crease.
  3. Ethan's eyes were blue, but turned hazel after chemotherapy.
  4. Ethan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) when his was 2 years 9 months 19 days (Friday, February 13, 2004)
  5. Ethan was born with a TON of hair and never lost it until chemo took it.  :(
  6. Ethan was diagnosed with Tethered Cord Syndrome in 2008.  It is what kept him from walking for so many years.  Once the neuro surgeon cut the cord, it sprung up like a bungee cord!
  7. Ethan does not speak verbally, so communication remains our biggest challenge, but he has adapted sign language for him (ESL-Ethan Sign Language) to use and share with others.
  8. Ethan speaks volumes through his actions and by how he looks at you.  This includes anger, frustration, happiness, joy, and most of all- love.
  9. Ethan is a Daddy's Boy through and through- well, unless he is tired or sick and then he's all mine.
  10. Ethan LOVES feet.
  11. Ethan LOVES cake and ice cream- individually or together.
  12. Ethan LOVES girls.  LOL.
  13. Ethan is the sweetest little flirt.  ;)
  14. Ethan does not watch TV.
  15. Ethan is not attached to any one toy.
  16. Ethan loves to swing.
  17. Ethan was very jealous of Diva Princess (Loren) when I started taking care of her, but he has grown to love her.  He even goes up to her and gives her kisses just because.
  18. Ethan has the most affectionate and infectious giggle on the planet.
  19. Ethan has the world's longest yawns.
  20. Ethan was born in California, moved to North Carolina, and has visited Hawaii, Texas, Oregon, Washington, New York, Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, Colorado, and Maryland.  He has been in Nevada, Utah, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee during the drive from California to North Carolina.
  21. Ethan has taught me, my husband, our families, our friends, classmates, teachers, and strangers what it is to love and accept.  He has changed us for the better.

Couponing

I have high aspirations of being an awesome couponer...in my head.  The ideas flow for how organized my new little binder with 9-pocket page Ultra-Pro baseball card holder sheets will be once filled with multiple bar-coded, money-saving goodness.  The image of standing at the grocery checkout waiting for the clerk to ask if I have any coupons- "Why, yes- yes, I do", as I drop a hefty handful of scannable discounts over to where my bill goes from well over $100 to less than $20.  Ahhh, in my head it has stayed.

Because once I open the ads of the local newspaper and see all of the mass coupons that are waiting be cut, I begin to have a panic attack of which page of my nifty 9-pocket page Ultra-pro sheet I am going to use because it HAS to be organized.  What's the point of having an awesome 9-pocket page Ultra-pro sheet if it isn't organized?  THEN, to actually organinze the 9 pockets of each sheet.  Someone get me a bag, I'm hyperventilating thinking of it.

And, let's talk about coupon verbiage...so, you have to buy 3 in order to get a buck off?  Really?  I don't get it...

Yes, I have heard of Southern Savers and it is just as overwhelming.  Someone, anyone PLEASE have pity on me and hold a coupon intervention with me.

Speech Progress

Today was Ethan's third visit to his new speech therapist.  Our sessions are only 30 minutes, but we are already making progress!  We are using the PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) program.

Ethan HATED it and cried for most of the 30 minute session on Monday, but today's crying was drastically reduced and he got it.  It's amazing what an ice cream reward can do for therapy progress!

Field Trip!

Today, Ethan had a field trip to Tanglewood Park for a hay ride up to the pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin.  He was NOT a fan of the hay ride.  It's slightly embarrassing when your kid is the only one freaking out on a hay ride.

After Ethan picked out his pumpkin, it was back on the hay ride.  His assistant teacher has been fabulous with him.  Ethan was being very grabby and mean, but she kept saying "gentle" to him and working him through it.  I have been very pleased with how they are working with him.

We had lunch at one of the shelter's and then went to play on the playground.  Normally, Ethan is all about the swing, but not today.  He flipped out.  So, I put him on the "Jeep" to drive and he loved it.  I think this is because I always try to get the grocery cart with the steering wheels for him to "drive".

The biggest smile of the day was when Ms. Monica played by the tic-tac-toe.  I think that Ethan would have been perfectly ok with me not being there today.  He may be asserting some of his big boy independence by not wanting me chaperoning anymore.  I don't know, but this Momma may have a hard time with that!

I love this boy- mulch/sand laced face and all...

Tornadoes

We have had multiple tornado warnings since last night.  I slept through the happenings last night, even though we were in the "red" on the radar.  Scott is a storm chaser-wannabe, so he was up most of the night watching the storm.

This morning, the road to Ethan's school was flooded, but they didn't close it until 8:30 so there were a bunch of little cars that looked like they were going to float away just to get the kiddos to school.  The things we do for education...

Right before I left to go pick Ethan up today, it started to rain.  It was a steady rain, but it didn't occur to me that it might turn ugly.  I got to school just in time.  Scott called to say that we were under another tornado warning.  I was on my way out when the announcement came over the loudspeaker.  Ethan's teacher said to GO because they wouldn't let us leave after they went lockdown.  So, lockdown was being called as I ran out the front door.

The weather quickly turned U.G.L.Y.  And, there were (once again) stupid fools of the road who did not have their lights on.  I can be a lights nazi in bad weather.  Guess what peeps- if your wiper blades are moving, your lights need to be on.

Anywho- all's well.  I don't think any tornadoes actually formed and if they did, I haven't heard about it.

Speech Therapy

Ethan started speech therapy with a new private therapist yesterday.  I will be working directly with the therapist in the session.  I have only primarily observed before, so I am excited to be a direct part of the process.

I think that yesterday went well, considering.  I will have to stop by McDonald's or something on the way to therapy to pick up some ice cream because we know that Ethan will want ice cream, therefore he will have to ask for it.  Now, he does have a sign for ice cream, but we need him to understand the concept of grabbing the picture of what he wants in order to communicate his wants/needs.

I know that this is going to be a long road, but Ethan has shown some good signs of wanting to communicate over the past few months, so I am quite optimistic.  I would be even happier if he figured out how to use words, but one thing at a time, right?

School Services - HELP

Ethan is on the North Carolina Medicaid Waiver (CAP-MR/DD).  For those who don't know what that is, the waiver gets you Medicaid under a specific program and it does not have income limits.  Ethan does not have the full waiver, but for now we are extremely grateful.

I have found out that our school district does a "blanket" billing to medicaid for ALL children in school that are receiving EC services (ie., Speech, OT, PT...).  If the school gets paid, great, if not- oh well.  They do not have my permission to do this!  They say they can do it because they are not asking specifically which child has medicaid and which ones don't, therefore not violating any HIPAA laws.

So, why do I care?  I care because if my PRIVATE therapy services bill after the school, then my private service will be denied!  This is NOT ok!

I just got Ethan into a private speech therapy office 3 times a week (yay!).  When the therapist submitted to medicaid, they wanted to know exactly how often Ethan was getting speech at school and she then had to justify why the school therapy wasn't enough!  NOT.OK.

Does anyone else have this issue?  Someone tell me how this is ok.  They very well could mess up my child's given budget for services!  And, what doctor is signing off on all of this?  I know that the school district isn't contacting every student's pediatrician to have them sign off on the services rendered, so someone PLEASE tell me how this is legal????!!!

New Class Confirmed

Well, Ethan begins class in his new environment tomorrow.  So far, I don't have any reason to fear- well, that's a lie...there is a biter in the class.  : /  Academically, I don't have any reasons to fear.  I think that the teacher is not overly excited to have Ethan join the class, but more because she already has so many students and she knows that Ethan requires just a bit more attention.

The good news is that Ethan wanted to return to his "new" classroom on Friday when we took him back to his "old" classroom.  They sign everything with him and include him, which is something that I had not seen in his other class (not to say it wasn't happening, I just never had the chance to see it).  But, I do think that Ethan's obvious request to be in the "new" classroom spoke volumes.  I think that is where he felt he belonged.

Praying for tomorrow and that it brings a new happy chapter to our lives and that Mama Bear doesn't have to draw her claws out again!

Carowinds Make A Wish Reunion 2010

Phew, what a busy day!  We left our house around 7ish to go pick up Devin, you remember Devin- the young man who wrote that awesome paper?  We thought it would be nice to take him to Carowinds Amusement Park with us.  Fun for him, good for us.  We got down to Carowinds earlier than when the gates were opening.

Once inside, we went straight to The Intimidator.  It is the tallest, fastest, and longest coaster in the southeast and it ROCKED.  Goliath at Magic Mountain is still the best, but this was a very close second!  We love roller coasters.  We hope to go to Cedar Point one day.

We took Ethan on a few rides, but he wasn't feeling them too much.  He is very hit or miss with rides.  The Make A Wish Family Reunion every year gives us the chance to see if Ethan will have fun or not, but for free.  We are very thankful to Make A Wish for all they do for us and so many other MAW families year after year!

We left a bit after 2, rushed toward home, got gas, took Devin home, rushed home, changed clothes, spritzed hair, and then I went to my friend, Cheri's (Mama Cheri) beautiful wedding.  I will write more about it later, but it's been a really long day, but an awesome day.

40 Lives

Today, I went in for my platelets donation and hit the 5 gallon mark of blood product giving!  That equals 40 lives saved!!!  How freaking amazing is that?!?!  I was also a match for someone at Wesley Long Community Hospital!  It really makes my heart happy to know that a simple gesture of blood donation is saving a life, and even better- a life that is waiting on my blood specifically.

My dear boy has taught me so much about life.  Someone gave of their time and fear of needles to donate blood and platelets that saved Ethan's life.  I could never be thankful enough.  I encourage EVERYONE who is able- meaning you don't have a blood disorder or some barred reason (ie., living in Europe in the 70's) from American Red Cross, not the fear of needles- to make your appointment to give life.  You could very well be that match that someone is counting on to save their life.  JUST.DO.IT.

New Classroom

I went and observed the potential new classroom for Ethan today, along with our case manager.  I was actually surprised by how well he was doing.  The classroom staff definitely seemed to have a vested interest in the success of the children.  They were firm, but not evil; loving, but not pushed over.

They went out on the playground, and for the first time at this new school, I saw someone actually work with Ethan so he could play too.  The past few times that I have seen Ethan on the playground, he is sitting in his stroller watching everyone else play.  The sucky thing about the playground is the mulch.  My kid won't touch a cheerio, but his scoop up a handful of mulch and put it in his mouth...I don't get it.

When we went back to his regular class, he was very upset.  He cried and said that he wanted to go back to the other room.  So, I am taking that as a good sign that he would rather be in this new class.  Story developing...LOL.

A Girl I Know

A Girl I Know

Let me tell you about a girl I know

A girl whom I admire

A role model we all could follow

To be this girl, we all desire

She is compassionate and nurturing

Yet strong and always stands tall

She is always there encouraging

She’s that person who catches you before you fall

She is the North Star guiding at night

The rain purifying the fog

The moon in the dark, providing light

She is the pathway out of a bog

She’s full of so much love, it’s endearing

How can it fit inside her, this big heart?

Overcome by adversity, yet persevering

This girl with whom you’ll wish never to part

In my heart she will always reside

I am providential enough to say

Through sisterhood this girl and I are tied

And I would not have it any other way

My little sister, Kamrin, wrote this for me a few years ago.  I found it the other day and was reminded again of how truly blessed I am to have such an amazing and talented sister.  She likes to remind me of how I told her that she could never make any real money as a professional poet, and I would like to officially post that I think that she could TOTALLY prove me wrong.  (In my defense, I was not very old when I told her that, LOL)  Thank you, Drew.  Love you, sista.  *muah*

The Roof

So, I really need to quit putting things on the roof of my car.  Last week, I placed my phone and my iPod on the roof of my car before putting Ethan in his seat to go to school.  I specifically placed it where I just knew that I wouldn't not see it before getting in my car.  Um...I was wrong.

About a mile up the road, I had the "OH MY GOSH" moment.  I looked to my right to my purse and saw nothing.  Insert another "OH MY GOSH" moment, except this time it was likely with a few more profanities.  My sunroof was open and I reached out of it onto the roof and felt my iPod but no phone.  I pulled over to PRAY that it was on the roof still.  Nope.  *sigh*

I turned around in hopes of finding it since it was only a mile of road to look over.  Then, I thought that it had to of fallen off in the garage/driveway since it was placed very close to the slope of the front window.  Nope.  *double sigh*

So, I am now the owner of a new iPhone.  While I love my new phone, I am furious with myself as to why I have it.  This is not the first time that I have lost a phone via the roof of my car, nor is it the first time that I have lost anything else to the roof of a car.

Maybe one day I will share about leaving my flour "baby" on the roof and how my mom had to call it in to the Sherriff's Department.  But only if you ask nicely, LOL.

Scott was none too pleased with the latest roof victim.  I can't say I blame him.  I still look for my old phone along that mile stretch.  I see bright blue all the time and everytime I check it out, it's a Bud Light or Pepsi can.  :(  Oh well...I guess I will just have to enjoy my new phone and guard it with my life, and NEVER place it on the roof of the car!

Juice Plus+

Last Wednesday, I got on a plane and headed to Florida for the Juice Plus+ National Leadership Conference.  I have been taking Juice Plus+ for a few months and noticed a change in my energy level right away.  Some may know that my Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) can zap my energy to practically nothing on a daily basis, so for me to feel like I can go on without napping has been huge for me!  Scott also feels great.  I now know that JP+ was trying to help Ethan with his backed-up issue, too.
I signed on to be a distributor to offset my family cost and to possibly share it with others occasionally.  Why only occasionally?  Because I had it my head that for someone to coach wellness, you had to be the picture of wellness.  I don't think anyone would look at me and see that I am overweight and see wellness.

I decided to go to conference, at Bethany's urging, to learn more.  She swore to me that it would make the world of difference in how I viewed the company.  Oh boy...she wasn't kidding!  I am amazed, inspired, and hopeful.  I listened to speeches of people whose dreams came true.  I listened to BEAR GRYLLS!!!

The research, the proven system, the dedication to people's health and wellness is beyond awesome.  Some testimonials:

  • Woman with MS who lives mainly symptom FREE
  • Man who has had 4 heart attacks and is Type I Diabetic with insulin pump who is on the lowest dose cholesterol meds from the highest dose, and who is on minimal insulin too.
  • Parents whose kids have never missed a day of school due to illness
  • Woman who was supposed to have sinus surgery due to chronic sinus infections did not need the surgery AND rarely has sinus infections anymore
There are also studies how Juice Plus+ has improved dental health and skin!  Um, hello less fine lines and wrinkles...YES PLEASE!  All from the benefits of WHOLE FOOD NUTRITION from fruits and vegetables.  And, before you tell me that you eat lots of fruits and veggies or you eat well and/or organic, I would be AMAZED if you are eating the 9-13 servings PER DAY that is recommended.  Bridge that gap and fill it with Juice Plus+.

Juice Plus+ is not another fad nutrition scheme.  It is tried and true for over 40 years!  I feel the need to share it with everyone.  So while I may not directly appear to be the picture model for wellness, I have taken the step for my better self and for my family's better self.  Will you JOIN ME?

Happy 12th Anniversary to US!

wedding
Twelve years ago, today, Scott and I vowed to love each other forever.  Today, I flew back home from Florida to be greeted by Scott and Ethan.  Ethan ran over to me with arms wide open and was so happy to see me!  It was such a special treat since I thought they would just be waiting at the baggage claim curb.  I missed my guys so much!

I am so thankful for my marriage.  It is not perfect by any means, but we have weathered more storms than most, so I am so thankful that, while not easy, we have arrived back on dry land each time.

I could not imagine a better father for Ethan.  I have said it before how no one can make Ethan laugh like Scott.  Ethan's favorite thing to do lately is play Hide-n-Seek with Scott.  He doesn't have as much fun when I play it with him, LOL.

Anywho- love my husband.  Happy Anniversary, love.  ♥
