How do you say...

A-T-H-L-E-T-E?

I say, ath-leet, but have found many people pronounce it "ath-a-leet".  Where does the "A" come from?  Is this one of those supposedly vs. supposebly type deals?  LOL.

  1. Okay, Kristen, that's random!! LOL
I think it's got to be regional for people, or just rooted in a lack of education. "Supposebly" drives me nuts. Ah, who am I kidding, all those mispronunciations drive me nuts, as does creative punctuation. Aaaaagh.

    I say 'ath-leet'.

I misspelled 'triathlon' for a long time because everyone pronounces it 'tri-ath-a-lon'. But there is no 'a'. It's 'tri-athlon'.

This kind of thind drives me nuts, too.

  3. phonetically speaking, the final silent e in athletE makes the first E long (thus saying E instead of eh, like elephant) which makes it say Ath-Leet

Hi, my name is Molly and I am a word nerd :-)
