More Seizure Talk

I don't remember if I have mentioned this already, but Ethan has been having balance issues. This is a new development- within the past few weeks. He will walk into walls or even just fall over when crawling on the floor. He always falls to the right. My immediate thought was neuro since we already know that he has a smaller cerebellum, which affects balance.

I played phone tag for almost two weeks with neuro, but finally touched base at the end of last week. Ethan's neurologist wants to have his thyroid checked again. I asked if thyroid issues cause you to walk into walls and the response was "the thyroid can make you do lots of weird things". Ok, so I need to take E up to have a blood test. But, our appointment that was originally scheduled for March has now been moved up to next Wednesday.

My friend, Kimberly, asked me if Ethan had any fluid in his ears that may be causing him to be off balance. Hmmmm, Good Point- especially since his tubes fell out a couple of months ago. We saw the ENT today and Ethan's ears are perfect. No sign of infection or fluid, but he had Ethan do a tympanogram to check his pressures and those were fine too. He told us to definitely stick with the neuro idea because the only other thing that really might be causing an issue would be vision, but we have already cleared that too.

One thing that we also discussed with our ENT was how Ethan hasn't been sleeping very well and how on Saturday night after Carowinds, he kept waking up disoriented and kinda freaked out. I was laying down with him, so I saw his face and it was almost like he didn't know where he was and/or who *I* was for about 5-10 seconds. This happened numerous times during the night. I was surprised how many times he woke up considering the exhausting day we had at the theme park.

When I was telling our ENT about that night, he asked me if it seemed like he was having a seizure. I really hadn't thought about it until he said that, but considering the type of seizure I question he may have (sensory seizures), it would make sense ESPECIALLY because of how much sensory input he had during the day.

So, we are back to neuro. This will definitely be a topic of discussion next week. It makes it so hard to diagnose these types of things when the child is non-verbal and can't tell me if he has a headache. I just really think that there is something extra going on and my gut tells me that it's not his thyroid. But hey, I could be wrong.

Definitely get it checked out. But it might not be as scary as you think it is. Sometimes I have balance issues, especially when I get up in the morning. I seem to veer to the left, and can run into the dresser or the bathroom doorway. I was afraid it was an early sign of Alzheimers! But a friend gave me an article about "vertigo," with some "exercises" to help. It turns out that most of my balance problems in the mornings are because I usually have been laying on my left side for a long while before I get up. My balancing fluid is all cocked to the left? I dunno, but rolling over to the right for a couple minutes during the snooze alarm has helped.
That's a long way around of saying, maybe if Ethan has a habit of tilting his head to one side or the other for long periods, it might be having the same affect on his balance.
    Love and prayers,
    Barbara

  3. It's so frustrating when your kid is nonverbal. I hope you get things figured out. I remember you'd mentioned "sensory seizures" before. What exactly are they?
